Can't Taste Shisha Flavour?
So when i set up my hookah, i follow all the instructions and it works fine. However i do not seem to be experiencing any real flavour, just smoke. I have a standard hookah and hoses and i use Al-Fakher branded tobacco (atm i have double apple and cocktail). What am i doing/not doing that prevents me getting any flavour?
I do put in quite a lot of tobacco, but i do not pack it above the bowl. Also i usually only use one quick lite coal, should i break it in half?
The tobacco itself is in the tub and sealed, so i doubt it would lose flavour like that.
There could be a lot of sources, but since you say your getting smoke and just no flavor we can narrow it down a bit. AF is a decent brand and fairly flavorful especially the 2 you picked.
1) More tobacco. You probably need to put more tobacco in the bowl. It's okay if it touches the foil. Too much air space broils the tobacco leading to smoke but little flavor.
2) Too Much Heat. Coals have the correlation of More Heat = Less Flavor but Huge Clouds. I would break my coals and half and light them. Start with 1/2 less than you normally use. And play with it the amount of coals. Take a half off, put one on. Until you find the right balance for your packing and bowl.
3) Your Coals. If you are using quicklights this can be the source. Quicklights have their additives that some can literally kill the taste of anything you smoke just by using them. Try switching to naturals. http://www.hookah-shisha.com/store/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=2652&idaffiliate=284

Hookah 101 - Hot To Set Up and Smoke a Hookah
how do I smoke my hookah?
I was given a little brass hookah like the one in the link provided. I don't know how to use it. Most hookah resources talk about ceramic plates and whatnot and this small basic hookah doesn't have that stuff.

Setting Up Your Hookah
1.Place a base protector or cloth of some kind under your hookah base. This is to prevent slipping or tipping of the hookah, and also to disperse condensation if you use ice.
2.Fill the base with water or your own mix. You want to fill it to the point the downstem of the shaft is submerged by 1” to 1 ½”.
3.Attach the rubber grommet that goes between the base and the shaft, and attach it to the shaft.
4.Insert the shaft into the base making sure the downstem is submerged properly and that the fit is snug and airtight.
5.Place the Charcoal Tray on top of the shaft.
6.Insert the Grommet goes between the shaft and the bowl, into the base of the bowl.
7.Attach the bowl to the shaft, making sure it is attached snuggly and airtight.
8.Now insert a grommet into the stem for the hose. For multi hose hookahs, be sure to attach insert grommets for each hose and plugs if you are not using all the hoses.
9.You can test the hookah for air leaks at this point. Place your hand over the top of the bowl and smoke. You should hear the bubbles and feel the air coming in through the bowl. Then you will know the hookah is airtight. Once you are familiar with your hookah you will be able skip this test.
10.Now lightly sprinkle your Shisha Tobacco in the bowl until it’s even with the top of the bowl. Do not overfill the bowl or pack it tightly. This will cause improper air flow and result in a bad smoke.
11.Now place the screen or foil1 on top of the smoke. Do not use normal tobacco. It will not burn properly and result in a bad smoke. Poke holes in the foil all around.
12.For quick light coals: Pick up your first coal with a pair of tongs and light it with a butane lighter. Butane lighters ignite the coals quicker. It will start crackling and sparking. Do this over the tray on top of the stem. Place the coal back on the tray and light another one if needed for your hookah setup.
For natural coals: Place coals needed on the burner of your electric stove until glowing red. Place coals in charcoal holder using your tongs, and transport to hookah and place on top of the bowl.
13.Now place the coals on top of the screen or foil using your tongs. Now place a wind cover over the bowl. Give your hookah a few good puffs. The hookah may take several minutes to get started, so be patient.
